Turkish Adaptation of the Empathy Scale for Teachers: A Validity and Reliability Study

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to establish validity and reliability of the Empathy Scale for Teachers (EST), developed by Wang, et. al (2022) to gauge teachers’ empathy towards their students, by adapting it into Turkish. The participants were 393 teachers working in Hatay in the academic year of 2022-2023. The original scale included 19 four-point Likert-type items in English. First, the scale was translated into Turkish, and language validity of the scale translated was provided. Second, a pilot study was conducted with 60 teachers. Third, the scale with language validity was administered online to 393 teachers, which would provide data regarding construct validity. Then confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed. CFA showed that the adapted scale had the same factor structure with the original. To achieve reliability, Turkish and English versions of the scale were addressed to 35 English language teachers. Thus, test-retest reliability was provided. Furthermore, internal consistency coefficients of the whole scale and its components were calculated. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were .84 for the whole scale, .72 for the negative affective empathy, .87 for the positive affective empathy. This revealed that the Turkish adaptation of the EST, including 19 items and three component, was valid and reliable.
