Life Skills Scale-High School Form Development: A Study of Validity and Reliability
Abstract
The aim of the study is to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine the life skill levels of high school students. The study group consists of 801 students who study in 9, 10, 11 and 12th grades in Ankara. The five-point Likert scale consists of 16 items. The scale has four sub-dimensions (self-knowledge, interpersonal communication, responsibility and career planning). In order to determine the construct validity of the Life Skills Scale-High School Form (LSS-HSF), exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were applied. As a result of exploratory factor analysis (EFA), it was determined that the total variance explained was 52% and the total score of the LSS-HSF could be obtained. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), show that the model has good fit (χ2 = 255.32, sd = 100, RMSEA = .059, SRMR = .0511, NNFI = .930, CFI = .942). In the reliability studies of the scale, internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach α) obtained separately from the data sets used for EFA and CFA were calculated as .83 and .81, respectively. The findings show that the scale is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to determine the life skill levels of high school students.
