Primary school Teachers' perspectives on peer bullying and immigrant/refugee students

Abstract

The success of children in establishing healthy communication with their peers is one of the important factors in terms of adapting to the society in the socialization processes. Aggression and violence that cause peer bullying in school negatively affect not only bully and victim students, but also other students attending the school physically, socially and spiritually. The aim of this research was to determine the perspective of teachers on immigrant/refugee students and peer bullying. The participants of the study consisted of 8 teachers from 4 different schools in Gaziantep, Sahinbey during the 2020-2021 academic year. The research employed a case study design. In this research a semi-structured interview form was used to collect data. The obtained data were analyzed through content analysis. The findings highlighted that immigrant/refugee students got bullied by their Turkish peers. The reason for immigrant/refugee students to be bullied was explained as the lack of communication due to language, the prejudiced attitudes of Turkish families in their children and the inability of immigrant/refugee students to adapt. The teachers’ suggestions on reducing peer bullying underlined that Turkish students can be brought to school without prejudice by raising the awareness of families, there should also be socialisation activities that would give the opportunity for both families and students to get to know each other, and for children group studies and empathy activities could take place to give the opportunity to share. These would help reduce the peer bullying between the Turkish and immigrant/refugee students.
