Language Biographies of International Students Studying in Turkish

Abstract

This study was based on the theme of language biography in the European Language Portfolio. It aimed to determine the language learning biographies of students who learn Turkish as a foreign language. In this study, which was done at BARÜ TÖMER, interviews were conducted with 18 foreign students who were learning Turkish, and their language learning processes were evaluated. In this study, narrative research was employed as one of the qualitative research designs. The research sample consists of 18 students studying at Bartın University Turkish Learning Application and Research Center. Interviews with students were conducted face-to-face. A semi-structured interview form was used to collect data. The data were analyzed with the MAXQDA 2022 program. The data were analyzed to content analysis. The findings revealed that language acquisition processes among students from the same country share considerable similarities. The research also showed that students mainly acquire foreign languages through formal education in schools, language courses and through informal practices such as watching movies and listening to music. However, discrepancies were observed in students' proficiency levels. Based on the finding that students in the same class exhibit varying levels of proficiency, it is recommended that foreign language instruction should consider individual differences.
