Examining the Relationship Between Instrumental Self-Efficacy Levels and Attitudes Toward Instrumental Performance Among Students Studying Turkish Folk Dance

Öz

This study aims to examine the relationship between self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes towards instrument playing among students enrolled in the folk dance departments, in terms of various demographic variables. The research was conducted using a quantitative relational survey model with 163 students from different universities in Turkey during the 2022–2023 academic year. The data collection tools included the Instrument Performance Self-Efficacy Belief Scale, the Attitude Scale towards Instrument Practice, and a personal information form. The analyses revealed no significant differences in instrument performance self-efficacy and attitude scores according to demographic variables such as gender, school type at graduation, grade level and university of graduation. However, significant differences in attitudes towards instrument study were found according to age; it was determined that students aged 21–23 had positive attitudes. Students who had received music or instrument education prior to starting the conservatoire displayed more positive attitudes towards instrument study and held stronger self-efficacy beliefs than those who had not. Significant differences were found in self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes according to level of instrument playing ability. Additionally, the attitudes towards instrumental playing and self-efficacy beliefs of students aspiring to become music teachers were found to be higher than those of other students. Finally, a positive and significant relationship was found between self-efficacy beliefs regarding instrument performance and attitudes towards studying the instrument, revealing that students' self-efficacy perceptions strengthened their attitudes.
