The Effect of GeoGebra Supported Teaching of Fractions on Success, Permanence and Students’ Views

Öz

The study was designed to examine the effect of using GeoGebra on student success and permanence in fractions and to evaluate students' views about teaching methods. A quasi-mixed-methods design combined a pre-test–post-test control-group quasi-experimental design with a qualitative case study The study was conducted with 39 fifth-grade students in a public school (20 experimental and 19 control groups). The lessons were conducted with GeoGebra supported instruction in the experimental group and with the current method in the control group. Achievement test was used as data collection tool. In order to determine the students' views, three-question semi-structured interview forms were created. Quantitative data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance and analysis of covariance, while qualitative data were examined through descriptive and content analyses. As a result of the study, success scores of all students increased statistically significantly from pre-test to post-test. Additionally, a difference in permanence was found in favor of the experimental group. When the student views were analyzed, it was determined that learning the subject well in both methods was the biggest advantage. Students in the control group stated that solving few questions was a disadvantage. In addition, students in both groups suggested technology-assisted teaching for a good understanding of the subject. The findings show that GeoGebra-supported instruction was more effective in improving success and supporting permanence.
