The Effect of Narrative Texts Written by Students on Comprehension of Story Elements

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether there was a change in the level of understanding of the story elements as a result of the process of writing a narrative text that the students have constructed themselves. The study adapted one group pretest-posttest design. The participants consisted of 25 first grade students studying in a primary school in Edremit district of Van province in the spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. The study, which lasted for 4 weeks, used narrative text writing activities with students by following the Process-Based Writing Approach processes suggested by Tompkins (1998) and Jones (2002). In the pre-test and post-test process of the research, the success of the students in the comprehension questions about the story map was measured by reading two separate children's picture books written by professional authors and then using the "Story Map Questions" developed by Baumann and Bergeron (1993). Percentage, frequency, arithmetic mean, eta-square effect size correlation coefficient and T-Test were used in the analysis of the research data. The research concluded that there was a significant difference in favor of the post-test in terms of the students' comprehension questions about the story map, there was a score increase in the last measurement compared to the first measurement in terms of knowing/finding the elements of the story by the students, and there was a significant increase in points.
