Examination of Bilingular Children's Books in Terms of Turkish Language and Culture Teaching Program Themes: The Case of the Teda Project

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine whether the German-Turkish bilingual children's books published within the scope of the TEDA project are suitable for the themes and sub-themes of the Turkish and Turkish Culture lesson curriculum. In this study, qualitative case study method and the nested single case study design was used. Since the acquisition of the research objects was carried out during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the convenient sampling method was implemented. In this context, 24 of the 46 accessible books were included. In this study, document analysis method was preferred as a data collection tool and descriptive analysis and content analysis were used together in analysis phase. In order to provide trustworthiness of the study, interpretative validity criterias were implemented. As a result, it was seen that the themes of "environment, differences and coexistence", "me and my family", "human and nature" were the most represented themes in the books. Another result determined was that the related books are event-based and contain a scripting technique. With these aspects, they were thought to be elements that helps to teach Turkish culture.
