Examining the Chapters in the 6th Grade Mathematics Book According to Bruner's Mental Development Principles

Abstract

Textbooks constitute an important pillar for the success of educational programs. Textbooks are perhaps the most important components of the learning environment after teachers. Therefore, one of the most important factors in the success of student-centered education programs is the good preparation of the books. Another factor is that the structure of the books is understood-adopted- by teachers. In this study, it was aimed to examine to what extent the activities in one of the 6th grade mathematics textbooks taught in the 2019-2020 academic year were operational, imaginary and symbolic in the context of Bruner's mental development principle. The activities titled "Are we ready?", "Let's remember", "Let's learn together" and "Note" in the book were analyzed through document analysis. As a result, 60% of the activities in the textbook are symbolic, 34% are imaginary + symbolic, 3% actional and 3% imaginary representation. There is only one activity in the operational + symbolic and in the operational + imaginary + symbolic representation types. The distribution of activity representation types by unit, activity type and learning areas is similar to the overall book.
