Primary Education Teachers’ Mythic and Romantic Understanding Activities in First Reading and Writing Teaching

Abstract

Mythic and romantic understanding that were appeared first by Egan in 1970s highlight

creative thinking and educated mind in first reading and writing activities. This paper studied

that primary education teachers placed mythic and romantic understanding aspects in their

first reading and writing activities regarding their views. The study was conducted in

phenomenology method of qualitative research approach and 9 primary education teachers

participated in the study. Semi-structured interview forms were applied to gather data. There

was used a rubric developed by the researchers including mythic and romantic

understanding aspects. With the guidance of the rubric, the data were analyzed in content

analysis method. As a result, it was found that primary education teachers integrated mythic

understanding aspects in first reading activities; however, they followed traditional methods

in first writing activities and exercises. Teachers prefer dictation of traditional methods in

evaluation processes and they prefer mostly to evaluate writing skills. Teachers do not benefit

from teachers’ guidance books, they only consider introductory activities of these books

effective to adapt. The objectives for first reading-writing period of Ministry of National

Education are complementary with mythic and romantic understanding context. According

with the MONE’s objectives, using mythic and romantic understanding features in readingwriting

activities will contribute to children’s future developments in education and life in

order for teachers to support children’s creative learning, integrate cultural aspects of the

language, and raise the curiosity for reaching knowledge.
