Examination of Class Teacher Candidates’ Mathematics Teaching Self-Efficacy

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine whether self-efficacy levels of class teachers with regard to teaching mathematics vary according to gender, university grade and grade point averages (gpa). The study is a descriptive study with survey model. The sample of the study is composed of a total of 160 third grade and fourth grade students attending Elementary Education Department. In this study, “Mathematics Teaching Self-Efficacy Perception Scale” composed of 21 items and developed by Enochs, Smith and Huinker (2000) and adapted into Turkish by Çakıroğlu (2000), was used to collect study data. Data obtained as result of the administration of this scale analyzed by using SPSS (17.0) software. In the analysis of data, frequency, percentage, standard deviation, arithmetic mean, independent samples ttest and Kruskal Wallis H- test were used as statistical techniques. As a result of the study, although mean scores of class teacher candidates in “outcome expectancy” sub-dimension of Mathematics Teaching Self-efficacy Scale was good, it was found out that their scores from “personal efficiency” sub-dimension and overall mean scores from the scale were at medium level. Besides, it was revealed that mathematics teaching self-efficacy perceptions of class teacher candidates did not vary significantly in terms of gender, grade and grade point averages variables.
