Investigating Changes in Media Use of Social Studies Pre-service Teachers Who Have Taken a Media Literacy and Education Course

Abstract

This study examined the effects of the Media Literacy and Education course on the media use patterns of social studies pre-service teachers. Conducted within qualitative research framework, the study employed case study design and involved 33 teacher candidates enrolled at a state university in the Black Sea Region of Türkiye. Data were collected through pre-course and post-course interviews applied at the beginning and end of the semester, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques. The findings revealed a downward trend in the amount of daily time spent by the pre-service teachers on the phone and media. The participants spent the most time on social media sites, followed by messaging applications, YouTube, online radio and music applications, and digital streaming platforms. These applications were primarily used for purposes such as entertainment, social interaction and communication, education and learning, and shopping and product reviews. Although no substantial change was observed in the ranking of media tools and purposes of use, a decrease was identified in the time allocated to online radio, music applications, and shopping activities at the end of the study. As a result of the course, the teacher candidates reported increased awareness of media content and perceived improvement in critical thinking skills, conscious media use, and time management.
