What Are the Current Status and Needs of Preschool Teachers Regarding Multicultural Education According to Preschool Teachers and Administrators?

Abstract

This study investigated the current situation and needs of teachers in preschool institutions that serve Syrian children, focusing on multicultural education. In the study conducted using a case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, the participants consisted of 11 preschool teachers and 3 school administrators who had Syrian children in their classes. Individual and focus group interviews were conducted with the participants, and the data obtained were evaluated with content analysis. Data were collected through individual and focus group interviews with teachers and administrators. The findings revealed that teachers lacked adequate knowledge, skills, and training in multicultural education, which hindered their ability to address the needs of diverse classrooms effectively. Key challenges included language barriers, insufficient teaching materials, and limited parental involvement, all of which negatively impacted both the teaching process and the children’s adaptation. Moreover, the study highlighted that preschool institutions had not made sufficient arrangements to meet the cultural needs of children from diverse backgrounds. School administrators also exhibited limited knowledge and experience in implementing multicultural education practices, further complicating the integration of Syrian children. The study underscores the urgent need to enhance teachers’ knowledge and competencies in multicultural education, develop language support mechanisms, and implement cultural adaptation programs to support the educational success of Syrian children and foster an inclusive learning environment.
