Teachers’ Dark and Light Triad Personality Traits in the Context of Perceptions of Personal and Professional Competence
Abstract
How teachers, who are an important element for an effective education, perceive themselves professionally is a very important issue. In this context, how teachers perceive themselves personally and the personality traits they possess can also have an impact on their professional self-perception. For this reason, this study aimed to examine the relationships between teachers' professional competencies and their personal competencies, Light and Dark Triad personality traits. The participants of the study consisted of 245 teachers from different branches, 79 of whom were male and 166 of whom were female. The data were collected using Personal Information Form, Personal and Professional Competencies Scale, Light Triad Scale and Dark Triad Scale. The data were subjected to multiple regression analysis after necessary adjustments in SPSS 26 package program. The results indicated that Dark Triad personality traits had a negative effect on teachers' perception of professional and personal competence, Machiavellianism, one of the Dark Triad sub-dimensions, had a negative effect, and Humanism, one of the Light Triad traits, had a positive effect. The study concluded that as teachers' Machiavellianism characteristics decreased and their humanism characteristics increased, even at a low level, their professional and personal competencies increased. In line with these results, suggestions for practitioners and researchers are presented.
