Instructor Perspectives on the Course Content of Music Technology in Music Education Programs

Abstract

Today, the concepts and values that determine education, politics, strategy, and methods are expressed as 21st-century skills. These skills encompass many areas, including creativity, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, and the ability to use technology resources correctly and efficiently. In this context, it is observed that music education departments affiliated with universities' faculties of education have started to include courses involving music technologies in their new programs. However, despite containing relevant courses in the curriculum, the information about the course content could be more extensive on universities' websites and information packages. In this context, the research aims to determine instructors’ perceptions regarding the outcomes, materials, teaching methods, and assessment methods of music technology courses included in the music education department programs. A qualitative descriptive research study with a case study design was conducted, and a semi-structured interview form was used as the data collection tool. Seven instructors who teach music technology courses in music education departments in Turkey participated in the interviews. As a result, it was revealed that there was limited infrastructure, physical, and technological resources related to music technology, and students' preparedness levels were below expectations. Moreover instructors focus on focused on sound recording and editing programs as well as music notation programs, they used instructional methods such as lecture and demonstration-practice, and they employed assessment tools such as tests, practical exams, and project portfolios. The instructors stated that to improve the course in the future, it is necessary to address the deficiencies in technological and physical infrastructure, address the shortage of instructors, extend the course duration (which currently lasts only one semester), and incorporate project assignments.
