Examination of Secondary School Science Textbooks in Terms of Scientific Process Skills

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the representation of the activities in the Secondary School (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) Science Textbooks in terms of scientific process skills. The study was carried out with the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, and the descriptive analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. In order to determine which process skills the activities in the textbooks aim to develop, 17 scientific process skills were determined as a result of the literature review, and each activity was analyzed according to the definitions in the light of the theoretical framework. In line with the data obtained from the study; it was concluded that while the skills of observing, comparing, communicating, collecting and recording data, estimating, interpreting data were more involved in the activities in the books, the skills of classification, using number/space relations, forming hypotheses, determining variables and making decisions were less involved. In addition, it was determined that the most basic process skills and the least experimental process skills were included in the activities. According to the results of this study, it can be said that in the textbooks to be updated and written in the field of science, improvements should be made in the textbooks by increasing the rates of causal and experimental process skills in the activities, taking into account the cognitive levels of the students according to each grade level.
