Parental Participation at High School: Adaptation of Teachers’ and Parents’ Scales of Parental Participation

Abstract

Involving parent to education or parental involvement is assesed one of the most important
strategy to improve the quality of education and a systematic and programmed approach as
well. However the success of the programs and the activities depends on defining the
knowledge and attitudes of parents and teachers. In literatüre, although it is found some
scales in kindergarden and elementary school level, researches based on high school are
rather limited. So, the aim of this study is to adapt “High School and Family Partnerships
Teachers’ and Parents’ Survey”developed by Epstein et al. into Turkish. The sample group of
the research consists of 221 teachers and 252 parents. The structure of the original teachers’
scale with 23 factors was converted to a structure with 8 factors and the parents’ survey with
24 factors to a structure with 7 factors. However, the analysis which is about if the data is
suitable for confirmative factor analysis showed conformity of model-data. The result of
confirmatory factor analysis for both scales are following: the rate of χ2/sd for teacher scale
was 1.71, RMSEA 0.057, SRMR 0.077, CFI 0.85, GFI 0.61. The rate of χ2/sd for parent scale
was 1.73, RMSEA 0.054, SRMR 0.079, CFI 0.87, GFI 0.64. The Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of
the scales was found as 0.84 for teacher scale and .89 for parent scale. It is stated that the scales
which are adapted based on the obtained results of the research are accepted to be reliable
and valid for Turkish culture.

Abstract

Ailelerin eğitime dahil edilmesi ya da aile katılımı, eğitimin niteliğini arttırmaya yönelik stratejilerin en önemlilerinden biri olarak değerlendirilmesinin yanısıra sistematik ve program temelli bir yaklaşımdır. Ancak oluşturulacak programın ve uygulamaların başarısı öğretmen ve anne-babaların bu konudaki bilgilerinin, tutumlarının belirlenmesini gerektirmektedir. Alanyazında okulöncesi ve ilkokul kademeleri ile ilgili çalışmalara, kimi değerlendirme araçlarına rastlanırken genel olarak lise kademesindeki çalışmaların oldukça sınırlı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Epstein ve ark. tarafından geliştirilen “Ortaöğretim Okullarında Aile Katılımı: Öğretmen ve Veli Ölçekleri”nin Türkçeye uyarlanmasıdır. Araştırma grubunu, 221 öğretmen ve 252 veli oluşturmaktadır. Öğretmen ölçeğinin 23 boyutlu yapısı 8 boyutlu ve veli ölçeğinin 24 boyutlu yapısı 7 boyutlu bir yapıya dönüştürülmüştür. Verilerin doğrulayıcı faktör analizi için uygunluğunu gösteren analizler, model-veri uyumunu ortaya koymuştur. Doğrulayıcı faktör analizi sonucunda öğretmen ölçeği için χ2/sd oranı 1.71, RMSEA 0.057, SRMR 0.077, CFI 0.85 ve GFI 0.61; veli ölçeği için χ2/sd oranı 1.73, RMSEA 0.054, SRMR 0.079, CFI 0.87 ve GFI 0.64 olarak bulunmuştur. Ölçeklerin Cronbach Alfa iç tutarlılık katsayısı öğretmen ölçeği için 0.84 ve veli ölçeği için de 0.89’dur. Böylece eldeki veriler üzerinde gerçekleştirilen analizler sonucunda, uyarlanan ölçeklerin, Türkiye’de kullanılmasının uygun olduğu belirlenmiştir
