Teacher-Academician Collaboration Attitude Scale: Validity and Reliability Study

Abstract

Schools and universities are part of an educational culture that supports and complements each other. So much so that academic research conducted in universities affects and is affected by schools. However, when the literature is examined, there is a significant disconnection between universities, where scientific knowledge is produced and schools where learning-teaching practices are done. Effective cooperation is recommended to overcome this disconnection. In this sense, teachers' trends towards cooperation with academicians were wondered, and no measurement tool in the literature that measures teacher-academic cooperation was found. Thus, a teacher-academician collaboration attitude scale was developed to measure teachers' tendencies towards cooperation with academicians. In this context, validity and reliability analyses were made using data from the study group of 822 teachers from different branches. Accordingly, a three-factor structure consisting of 24 items was obtained. These factors were named as “Vocational Learning”, “Emotional State”, and “Motivation” by examining the relevant literature. The internal consistency coefficient for the whole scale was .947, and the KMO value was .969. In addition, the total variance ratio explained by the factors of the scale was 63.56. The study concluded that the scale was valid and reliable for determining teachers' attitudes towards cooperation with academicians. In this direction, the scale can distinguish between those with the feature to be measured and those without. The data obtained from the study were discussed and applying the scale to different study groups with different characteristics was suggested.
