A Descriptive Content Analysis on Publications in Reciprocal Teaching Technique
Abstract
This study aimed to reveal the trends in a comprehensive and holistic manner by classifying the research conducted between 1984 and 2023 using the reciprocal teaching technique in terms of citation information, year, subject area, research model, sample size, sample group, data collection tools and data analysis methods. The study adopted a descriptive-content analysis method to examine in detail the scientific studies conducted from the historical process of the reciprocal teaching technique (1984) to the present (2023). The universe of the research consisted of 41 scientific studies including theses, articles, reports, and abstracts published on the reciprocal teaching technique between 1984 and 2023. Of these studies, 21 were articles, 7 were doctoral dissertations, 4 were master's thesis, 4 were reports, 4 were abstracts and 1 was a book chapter. The "Publication Classification Form" developed by the researchers was used. The study used content analysis. The distribution of studies in the field of the Reciprocal Teaching Technique according to publication years indicated a significant increase as of 2018. The study determined that most of the studies were carried out on learning models and special education according to the subject areas, which can be explained by the fact that the reciprocal teaching technique was generally used to focus on reading comprehension skill. Further, the findings highlighted that most of the studies were conducted with participants between 31 and 100 according to sample size, and that most of the studies used quasi-experimental designs as the quantitative method, and the review and explanatory sequential designs as the qualitative method. The researchers suggest that studies in the field of the Reciprocal Teaching Technique can be diversified.
