Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether the group piano instruction has significant effect on the development of the future music teachers’ functional piano skills at the departments of music education of faculties of education. This research was an experimental study and the pretest-posttest design control group model was applied. The study group of the research consisted of 40 junior-year students in Gazi University, Department of Music Education in the fall semester of the academic year 2010-2011. Before and after the experiment, groups have completed “Performance Test of Harmonization and Transposition on the Piano” prepared by the researcher to assess their levels of harmonization and transposition skills. The experimental group was provided with piano instruction in a group setting for six-week in addition to regular private piano instruction. Meanwhile, the control group had only piano lessons. As a result of the research, scores of the students involved in experiment and control groups differentiated from each other. The post-test performance scores of the students of experimental group were significantly higher than scores of the students of control group as a result of the group piano instruction. It was concluded that group piano instruction had a profound influence on the students to improve their harmonization and transposition skills.
