Psychological Factors Associated with Online Friendship in Adolescents: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

For decades, social research has focused on exploring the fundamental characteristics and qualities of face-to-face friendships. However, many friendships also occur online today. Therefore, questions related with psychological effects of online friendships on adolescents and the reason why adolescents are turning to online friendships, are becoming increasingly important and the answers to these questions are also crucial for the mental health of adolescents. Thus, this study aimed to review the literature on psychological factors related to online friendship in adolescents. A search was conducted using the English keywords "e-friendship", "virtual friendship", "online friendship" and "online relationship" without any year limit, in seven databases, including PubMed, Sage Journals, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer Link, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley Online Library. 10 studies, with participants aged between 10 and 20, met the inclusion criteria. According to the results obtained from these studies, positive attitudes towards online friendships, feeling of loneliness, and negative experiences in family and peer relationships motivated adolescents to engage in online friendships. Regarding psychological factors related to online friendship, the study observed that online friendships had both positive effects (psychological need satisfaction, life satisfaction) and negative effects (loneliness, negative emotions, jealousy, low well-being) on adolescents' mental health.

Öz

Onlarca yıldır araştırmalar yüz yüze arkadaşlıkların temel özelliklerini ve niteliklerini keşfetmeye odaklanmış olsa da, günümüzde pek çok arkadaşlık çevrimiçi olarak da gerçekleşmektedir. Bu nedenle çevrimiçi arkadaşlığın ergenler üzerindeki psikolojik etkilerinin neler olduğu ve ergenlerin neden çevrimiçi arkadaşlığa yöneldiği soruları giderek önem kazanmakta olup, bu soruların cevapları ergenlerin ruh sağlığı açısından da oldukça önemlidir. Dolayısıyla bu araştırma, ergenlerde çevrimiçi arkadaşlıkla ilişkili psikolojik faktörlere yönelik alanyazında yapılan çalışmaları gözden geçirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, herhangi bir yıl sınırlaması olmaksızın “e-arkadaşlık”, “sanal arkadaşlık”, “çevrimiçi arkadaşlık”, “çevrimiçi ilişkiler” anahtar kelimelerinin İngilizceleri yazılarak Pubmed, Sage Journals, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer Link, Taylor & Francis ve Wiley Online Library olmak üzere yedi veri tabanında tarama yapılmıştır. Katılımcılarının yaş aralığı 10-20 olan toplam on çalışma dahil etme kriterlerini karşılamıştır. Bu çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçlara göre; çevrimiçi arkadaşlığa yönelik olumlu tutum, yalnız hissetme, aile ve akran ilişkilerinde yaşanan olumsuz deneyimler ergenleri çevrimiçi arkadaşlık kurmaya yöneltmektedir. Çevrimiçi arkadaşlıkla ilgili psikolojik faktörlere ilişkin olarak da, çevrimiçi arkadaşlığın ergenlerin ruh sağlığı üzerinde olumlu (psikolojik ihtiyaç doyumu, yaşam doyumu) ve olumsuz (yalnızlık, olumsuz duygulanım, kıskançlık, düşük iyi oluş) etkileri olduğu görülmektedir.
