Artificial Intelligence Language Models' Perspective on Peer Bullying in Elementary School: A Phenomenological Participant Analysis

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the conceptualizations, explanations, and pedagogical approaches of artificial intelligence-based language models regarding peer bullying at the primary school level as participant perspectives. In this study, artificial intelligence tools are not treated as sources of information; rather, they are considered as research participants whose definitions, interpretations, and constructions of the phenomenon of peer bullying are analyzed. In this respect, the study offers a unique perspective that differs from traditional approaches to the use of artificial intelligence in education. The research was conducted as a descriptive case study within the framework of qualitative research designs. The study group consists of ten widely used AI-based language tools belonging to different developers. Data were collected using a semi-structured AI Opinion Form developed by the researcher, consisting of 13 open-ended questions. The same questions were asked to all AI tools under the same guidelines, language, and conditions; the written responses obtained were analyzed using qualitative content analysis methods. The research results show that AI tools define peer bullying largely in line with the literature, based on intentionality, repeatability, and power imbalance, and can generate pedagogical explanations appropriate for the primary school context. However, limitations were identified in terms of academic source usage, risk of hallucination, and contextual data bias. Based on the findings, it is recommended that AI tools be used in educational settings as supportive but non-decision-making tools, within a framework of critical human oversight and ethics.
