The Moderating Role of Teacher Emotion Socialization Reactions in the Relationship Between Parent Emotion Socialization and Children's Social Information Processing Skills

Abstract

In this study, behaviors regarding how teachers and parents influence children's social competencies were aggregated, and the effect of teacher and mother emotion socialization reactions on children's social information processing (SIP) processes was examined. Additionally, the study investigated whether teacher emotion socialization reactions have a moderating role in this relationship. The study was conducted using quantitative methods within the scope of the relational survey model. The research sample consisted of 114 preschool children attending schools in the province of Konya and 12 teachers. The Coping with Children’s Negative Emotions Scale (Parent and Teacher Forms) and the Social Information Processing Test for Preschool Children were used as data collection tools. The findings showed a low-level negative correlation between teachers’ negative emotion socialization reactions and children’s SIP skills, and a low-level positive correlation between their positive reactions and SIP skills. For parents, negative emotion socialization reactions were determined to be moderately negatively correlated with SIP skills, while positive reactions were moderately positively correlated. Furthermore, it was found that teacher emotion socialization reactions significantly moderated the relationship between parents' emotion socialization reactions and children's SIP skills. It was observed that as teachers’ positive emotion socialization reactions increased, the effect of parents' positive reactions on SIP weakened; conversely, as teachers’ negative reactions increased, the effect of parents' negative reactions strengthened. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that emotion socialization is a multi-dimensional process in both the family and school contexts, and that children's social information processing skills are shaped within an interactive structure involving parents and teachers.
