Reflections of Disaster Management Phases on the Disaster Awareness (I-II) Curriculum

Abstract

This study analyzes the Disaster Awareness Course Curriculum (I-II) published in 2023, focusing on disaster management stages. The research employs a document review method, with the primary data source being the Disaster Awareness (I-II) Course Curriculum. The data extracted from this program document were analyzed using content analysis. The results of the first research question showed that the program's general structure was articulated and well-organized. In addition, the curriculum includes 13 course-specific skills, though the values are not presented under a special heading. Regarding the second research question, the study found gains for all disaster management phases in the program. Among the phases, the most gains are for the "risk and damage reduction" phase (25) in the pre-disaster period, and the least gains are for the "recovery" phase (6) in the post-disaster period. This situation shows that related programs, such as disaster education, disaster awareness development, and disaster management systems, should be improved. Based on these results, it is recommended to incorporate lesson-specific values and literacy skills, such as disaster and geography, include more outcomes related to the improvement phase, and establish a relationship between out-of-school learning environments and outcomes.
