Analysis of Test Anxiety Scale items in terms of Differential Item Functioning by Different Methods
Abstract
The purpose of high school education, which one of the formal education institutions, is to prepare individuals to society as well as preparing to higher education system. However, in Turkey due to high number of young population and inversely the shortages on higher education placements in related subjects, which lead candidates to sit for two tier examinations as a result of that they can get a placement at higher education institutions. At the end of 12-year education these examinations enable candidates to choose future job opportunities which result in anxiety over the candidates. Anxiety level is highly related variable for students success at school and in exams. Schools´counselling services has been applying scales especially to measure students´anxiety and to take necessary precautions. The data received from anxiety scale enable to see anxieties in correlation with gender, socioeconomic level, parents’ education level, school type and other variables. These differentiations between individuals can be caused by personal characteristics or scale´s structure. This kind of differences will cause validity problems. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate if the antiexy scale’s items have differantial item functioning according to gender and school type. According to results, it is aimed to obtain a more valid and reliable scale by determining items has item bias. In addition, it is aimed to have reliable data and according to this to have reliable interpretations.
