The impact of social media on women's dieting habits

Öz

Aim: This research was conducted to examine the effect of social media on women's diet habits.
Methods: This descriptive study was conducted at three different Family Health Center between May 2018 and January 2019. Data were collected from 541 women between the ages of 18-65 by questionnaire form. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation), Chi-Square test, Kruskal Wallis, one Way ANOVA, and t-test analysis were used to evaluate the data.
Results: It was determined that women's age, education level, employment status, economic status, and marital status affected body mass index (BMI) (p < .001). Individuals who used social media to diet were found to have a higher BMI. A statistically significant relationship was found between using social media to access dietary resources and conducting research and self-definition (p < .001).
Conclusion: This study showed that there is a close relationship between women's socio-demographic characteristics and BMI. In the study, it was concluded that women who define themselves as overweight or overuse social media to access dietary information sources and to conduct research. It was determined that the majority of women did not think positively about diet information on social media and the use of these diets.

Kadınların diyet yapma alışkanlıkları üzerine sosyal medyanın etkisi

Öz

Amaç: Bu araştırma kadınların diyet yapma alışkanlıkları üzerine sosyal medyanın etkisini incelemek amacıyla yapıldı.
Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipteki bu araştırma Mayıs 2018-Ocak 2019 tarihleri arasında üç farklı Aile Sağlığı Merkez’inde yapıldı. Veriler 18-65 yaş arası 541 kadından anket formuyla toplandı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde tanımlayıcı istatistiklerin (sayı, yüzde, ortalama, standart sapma) yanı sıra Ki Kare testi, Kruskal Wallis, tek Yönlü ANOVA ve t-testi analizi kullanıldı.
Bulgular: Kadınların yaş, öğrenim düzeyi, çalışma durumu, ekonomik durumu ve medeni durumunun beden kitle indeksini (BKİ) etkilediği belirlendi (p < .001). Diyet yapmak için sosyal medyayı kullanan bireylerin daha yüksek BKİ’ye sahip olduğu bulundu. Sosyal medyayı diyetle ilgili kaynaklara ulaşmak için kullanma ve araştırma yapma durumu ile kendini tanımlama arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki bulundu (p < .001).
Sonuçlar: Araştırmada özellikle kendini hafif şişman ve üstü olarak tanımlayan kadınların sosyal medyayı diyetle ilgili bilgi kaynaklarına ulaşmak ve araştırma yapmak için kullandığı sonucuna ulaşıldı. Kadınların çoğunluğunun sosyal medyada yer alan diyet bilgileri ve bu diyetlerin kullanımı konusunda olumlu düşünmedikleri belirlendi.
